Finally a normal week. Vocabulary chapter 1 homework due tomorrow. Quiz Friday.
Today we are learning about the Puritans by visiting 6 stations to gather information. First Block we will get set up on Schoology tomorrow and you can post your narrative writing. Fourth Block your myths should be posted in schoology already!

This week we are studying 2 essays by Emerson- "Self Reliance" and "Nature."
Civil Disobedience essays due Monday 10/19/15. Vocab 10 Quiz Friday. Monday: Students have vocabulary chapter 8- quiz Friday. We watched an introductory Prezi on"The Devil and Tom Walker" and read most of the story. The remainder of the story and the questions were homework. See assignments tab for a copy if absent.
This week we are starting our unit on Romanticism. Today was just an introduction to the basic characteristics of the period. If you were out or need a review watch this 10 min. video for an overview. Complete this list of characteristics at the end of the video. Students also received their chapter 7 vocab with the quiz scheduled for Friday. Tomorrow students will begin presenting their 60 Second Pitch for their 20time projects. Please look for a letter explaining in more detail what 20time is all about. Please not on the 20time rubric, it will be out of 25 pts. the ELA component is not required. We are meeting that standard via the blogs and final presentation.
Monday: No School
Tuesday: 9/8/15 We explored how punctuation matters and can change the meaning of our writing. Students went to the computer lab and took notes on a PPT introducing "Rationalism." Then students participated in a formative review by determining how a Puritan vs. a Rationalist would respond to various posed situations. Wednesday; 9/9/15 Today students were introduced to Patrick Henry and his "Speech at the Virginia Convention. In teams students raced to complete a puzzle by answering questions about Patrick Henry and his speech. Thursday: 9/10?15 We continued to work through Henry's speech. Today analyzing for rhetorical devices. Students charted examples of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos from the speech. Tomorrow we will have an open notes test on the speech. Friday: 9/11/15 Open notes test on Patrick Henry and his speech. Introduction of 20time Monday:
Students completed The Crucible. We had a formative assessment by creating a twitter feed for various characters. Vocabulary chapter 4 was handed out. Homework is excused for students who scored an 18 or better on last week's quiz. A menu style project was handed out for students to select a combination of 100 points. This will be their summative grade over the play. Once they have completed the required 100 point value, students may work on additional projects for extra credit. See me for specific rubrics for each project on the menu. Tuesday-Friday Students will be in the computer lab working on their Crucible projects. Projects are due by the end of class Friday. Weekly vocab ch. 3 was handed out. Quiz Friday. Remember 5 quizzes will equal 1 test grade. You still have a chance to bring up your grade....Study a little each day. Students that make a 90 or 100 are excused from the vocab homework. Vocabulary home work is due Tuesday. Today we put together a flip book to be used with "The Crucible." We read Act 1. Tuesday: 8/25/15 We reviewed events from Act 1 and preformed a Reader's Theater for the final scene of Act 1. We completed the reading of Act 2. Students will work with partners tomorrow to complete the questions for Acts 1 & 2. Wednesday: I am out of the building today at a workshop. Students will partner up to complete the questions over Acts 1&2 of "The Crucible." They will also view the first two acts of the movie version. Thursday: Students read and discussed Act 3 of the Crucible. We also reviewed Act 2 with a Jeopardy game. We ended class with a Kahoot review of this weeks vocabulary words. Quiz Friday. Friday: We took our vocab ch. 3 Quiz. After the quiz, we watched the movie version of The Crucible through the acts we have read. Monday 8/17/15
Vocabulary chapter 2- homework due Tuesday- Quiz 8/21/15 Poetic devices and Literary terms handout given Students used SoapStone to analyze the song Demons by Imagine Dragons and draw comparisons to Jonathan Edwards' sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." Finally, we reviewed Puritan beliefs via a Kahoot. Tuesday: 8/18/15 Students received the new Mentor sentence for this week and next and the notes that will assist them in analyzing the weekly sentence. These notes should be kept in their binder behind the "Focus" Tab. Today we are looking at Puritan Plain style writing and reading the poem "To My Dear and Loving Husband" by Anne Bradstreet. Students will also write a poem in Puritan Plain style. Finally we will watch "In Search of History-The Salem Witch Trials" in preparation for starting "The Crucible." Wednesday: 8/19/15 Students worked with groups to research information about McCarthyism and it's connection to The Crucible. Students were given a study guide for the test Friday over Puritanism and Sinner's in the Hands of an Angry God. We also did a simulation of the Salem Witch trials and learned how and why the accused responded the way they did and how the hysteria could have spread so quickly. Friday: 8/22/15 Students took vocab quiz 2 and a test over Puritanism. |
